What is a plugin?

A plugin is a discreet piece of website code, that adds specific functionality to a WordPress website.  Plugins can be coded by your website developer, or obtained from a third party developer, to add certain features to their website above and beyond what WordPress natively offers. WordPress plugins can be free or paid, depending on the functionality and complexity. Some plugins have a free version with limited functionality, with full functions unlocked for a license fee.
